Basic Information Character Name Eva “Lili” Vogel Age 16 Gender Female Country Liechtenstein Hometown Vaduz House Position and Job “Soldier” and technician (like tapping into phone lines, surveillance cameras, etc)
The Whole Story Looks Don't Mean Everything
Lili is dwarfed by all of her coworkers, as well as most people her age at barely five feet tall. She is a thin girl--not unhealthily so--but because of this, her dainty yet boyish figure is especially notable. She can’t help her barely-there breasts and waist, but she does all in her power to maintain a somewhat feminine appearance.
For a long time, before she met her “brother,” she did this by keeping her waist-length hair in two sweet pigtail braids, each resting on a shoulder. To her, it seemed more practical for working as a maid and easier than simply letting it cascade down her back loosely or conversely put it up in an elaborate fashion.
On an impulsive whim sometime after Eva was adopted by her brother, she took a pair of scissors to the straw-colored twin braids and was pleased with the result. In her opinion, it made her look older--though it really didn’t--and express her gratitude to Vash by copying his choppy, short hairstyle. After an incident in which she was mistaken for his younger brother, she’d been given one of her most treasured items: the royal blue ribbon always tied into a little bow on the right side of her head.
Beneath equally uneven, short bangs, green eyes are wide and sparkling like those of a newborn fawn. They only make her look younger on opposite sides of a petite nose, all on a pale, round face. Often times, a faint blush occupies her cheeks, lips curled upwards into a shy smile.
But Some of Us Are Ugly On the Inside, Too
On the outside, the petite blonde appears to be a sweet, quiet, and polite teenager. However, this is only partly true. She tends to stammer a bit because of initial shyness, but the impediments usually fade away after a minute or two of conversation. The bashful girl will blush simply when addressed and she even used to have trouble conversing with her adoptive brother, demonstrating how little it takes to make her sheepish and flustered. Because of this, as well as her inbred courtesy, she refrains from speaking unless spoken to which can be misinterpreted for severe timidity. However, when receiving orders or giving a report, she loses all nervousness and answers clearly with a level voice and straight face.
While she is afraid of sparking conversations, it doesn't mean she is rude or antisocial whatsoever. Despite warnings of "bad people," she will politely and genuinely return conversations with complete strangers, or even worse until the other is threatened by a paranoid Swiss. Lili is also generous and humble, possibly originating from her brother's selfless adoption of her. She enjoys giving gifts, though doesn't feel "deserving enough" to accept them (but she eventually does because she's easy to influence).
She is also very formal and polite, addressing her elders with a "Mr." or "Ms.” The German female has learned to be seen and not heard, especially in the presence of powerful or important people alike, emphasized by her past employer, as well as maintaining the appearance of and acting as a "proper lady." If one attempted to reverse her “snooty” manners, it’d be useless.
At times, Eva can be rather naive. She is no ditz--she is rather intelligent, and has a knack for technology--but she is very trusting towards anyone, despite the person's disposition and reputation. Much like a child, she refuses to believe that a person can be truly "evil" (even members of other mafia families) and isn't afraid to talk to them (as long as they speak first and it‘s in a neutral environment). The girl has had to employ her pistol more than once, but prefers peaceful settlements when possible. The curious girl is also very easily distracted, especially by cute things, and can be influenced with little effort. Her gullibility is not her strongest point, either.
Even though she is in the middle of her teenage years, she is very mature. Lili does not grow squeamish at the sight of blood, nor does she hesitate to fire when she or someone else is in danger. But even though she puts on a seemingly “emotionless” act when working, the girl does not always act like an adult. She has her childish moments--such as her love for sweets and presents--but most of the time maintains a composed countenance. When prompted, she clearly explains her viewpoint, if not concisely, though she doesn't prefer to actively engage in “family” meetings.
While she can easily speak her mind--in a polite way, of course--, lies do not flow from her tongue as easily. Lili believes lying to be completely disrespectful and abuse of their trust--plus she would never want to be lied to. But because of this, she may attempt to avoid truthful thoughts that may offend or upset. Though with her job, she is learning to stop regretting telling lies. Eva is no good at it still, but knows better than to spill the beans even if it cost her her life.
Lili is sweet and at times, sensitive, but rarely cries. Even when she was certain she was going to starve and be left to die, the mature young woman remained relatively calm despite her listlessness. The only instance Eva would cry would likely be if someone close to her, especially her brother, was hurt. Her usual concerns are over her appearance; she either gets quiet and even more curt with her replies, or even staring, horrified, at herself in a mirror for extended periods of time. These unsure moments can be easily cured, however, by something a simple as a hug and some reassuring words.
Eva holds a great deal of respect and love towards her brother. He is, after all, the one who generously took her in and gave her food and shelter completely by his free will. She believes that the two of them get along well and have their brother-sister moments, even with their occasional awkward conversations. He is her role model so she often imitates him, such as with her hair cut. In return for taking her in, she insists on doing the majority of the house chores like cooking, cleaning, and mending. Even years later, she enjoys helping out in every way she can as if she is still indebted to him.
She has also adapted to her brother’s frugal lifestyle, having developed a taste for less-expensive items--or rather, an indifference to quality. Lili is lucky she isn’t very picky and doesn't mind the “cheap cheese” Vash buys. His thriftiness has rubbed off on her, and coupled with her needlecraft hobby are the origins of much of her wardrobe. Eva can sometimes get carried away in her sewing, though, and end up working until the wee hours of the morning.
I Have a Past:
Is being revised, was written in a rush. xD
Eva was born in the tiny country of Liechtenstein on July 12th, 1931, as the firstborn of a struggling single woman named Lili Vogel. Though the nation was neutral, talk of Nazism floated around Vaduz, the capital and her birthplace, distressing Eva's mother as well as many others. When she was seven, in 1939, just after the invasion of Poland, her mother had her pulled out of school to be sent to Switzerland along with some refugee children from Austria.
However, it wasn't the retreat the kids expected; instead, the young girls were trained as maids and the boys to work outside the house as gardeners and the like. Eva matured quickly and adapted easily, but, like all the others, waited impatiently for letters from home. After the first couple of years, she finally realized she'd never see her mother again, as did the rest of the children. Instead of bursting into tears, however, she assumed the role of "mother" (though they were all about the same age), for the first time using her mother's name instead of her own, and comforted them.
After the war ended, her "boss" simply told her that her services were no longer required--as if he was paying her!--and dropped her in a nearby town. Lili had no clue where she was, nor had she any belongings, and the fourteen-year-old was forced to scavenge to survive. She grew even thinner than she was before, and her long blonde hair was filthy and tangled, having fallen out of the neat, pretty braids.
Finally, all her energy was gone; Eva couldn't walk and could barely manage words, and just about welcomed death. Just as she believed she was thinking her last thoughts, however, a man appeared and took her in. The girl was hesitant and wary of him, but with the clock ticking and no other choice, she became his younger sister.
After she verified that he was a kind person with no bad intent, she opened up. Lili realized that all people weren't bad and that trusting others was okay, and proceeded to connect to the outside world she'd been kept from for the longest time. To repay Vash, she did the only thing she knew how to--she worked for him for nothing in return; after all, he'd given her a chance at life, what was some more work?
Eventually, she found that he was involved in the mafia--though her opinions of him remained unchanged--and they moved to the United States. Eva, like the quick learner she is, became skilled in working with technology (she occasionally had to do some electric work with the boys for her boss when she was young) and made herself useful, dreading the thought of being a burden.
Other Lili always carries a gun on her, usually hidden somewhere under the feminine skirts she wears so as to not look suspicious. Give Me More: -Vash -animals -work/being helpful -the mountains -flowers -books -her “family” -technology/machines I Could Live Without: -Russian mafia -receiving gifts -being treated like a child -when homeless/starving people are ignored by others -being put on the spot/having to make an important decision quickly Roleplay Sample:
BANG!
The hand-me-down M1911 in her dainty hands recoiled after the shot, putting a bullet in the offender’s brow. Her meadow green eyes widened in horror as he collapsed, blood staining his dark hair and running down his face. His eyes--still open--went suddenly white as his irises rolled back to view the inside of his head. The sixteen-year-old wanted to pry her eyes from the gruesome sight--one she’d caused--but was unable, frozen in shock. She’d killed a man.
I’ve killed him…
Lili stared at the newly dead member of the Asian mafia until she finally remembered why she’d done it. She dropped the gun immediately and hurried to the Swiss man’s side, no less comforted at his state; the other man’s bullet had penetrated his stomach, dyeing his shirt a deep crimson. Hands trembling, Eva shed her jacket and, the article of clothing still in hand, pressed it onto the wound to stop the bleeding. She knew she shouldn’t have gone alone and without some kind of first-aid kit, but there had been no time. As soon as she heard the orders of the Asian family boss via the tapped telephone wires, she’d tossed the headphones aside and flown from her seat.
Normally, she wouldn’t have ever been able to do such a thing; sure, she’d shot someone before, but not to kill. This time, however, she’d taken a human life in some back alley in their own district. At the time, Lili had no sympathy for the man; not only was he intruding, he’d shot the most important person to her. In her mind, that warranted death.
Shaking her head of the afterthoughts, she prayed someone would find them sooner than later. Eva wasn’t strong enough to carry Vash, but she refused to leave him. What if the Asian man had backup, or they wondered what was taking him so long? She had to protect her brother if other showed up, or he’d be killed as well. And that was something she did not want to consider.
